Set up an Epson TM-U220IIB with Foody
This guide takes an Epson TM-U220IIB-i from its box to the first ticket sent by Foody. Allow about 20 to 30 minutes per printer once the restaurant network is ready.
Check the exact model before you start. A printer that connects directly to Foody must be the intelligent TM-U220IIB-i variant and show Server Direct Print in TMNet WebConfig. A standard USB or Ethernet TM-U220IIB does not include this polling service. It must instead be attached through a compatible intelligent Epson printer configured as a gateway. If Server Direct Print is missing, stop and contact Foody with a photo of the model label.
What you need
- The printer and its Epson power supply.
- A compatible ribbon cassette and 76 mm paper roll.
- An Ethernet cable connected to the restaurant router or switch.
- A computer or iPad on the same network during setup.
- A FoodyAdmin owner or manager account with printer-management permission.
- A router DHCP reservation, recommended so WebConfig remains easy to reach.
Do not use a guest network. Guest Wi-Fi commonly isolates devices. Foody does not require an incoming port at the restaurant: the printer makes an outbound HTTPS connection to Foody.
1. Unbox and inspect the printer
- Remove the printer, power supply, power cord, and ribbon cassette from the box.
- Remove all transport foam, tape, and protective material.
- Check the label underneath or behind the printer. Record the exact model, serial number, and MAC address.
- Place the printer away from splashes, steam, and heat, leaving room to open both covers.
- Keep the printer switched off while connecting cables.
The MAC address identifies the network interface and can be used for a DHCP reservation.
2. Load the ribbon and paper
Ribbon cassette
- With the printer off, open the ribbon cover.
- Take up slack by gently turning the cassette knob in the indicated direction.
- Fit the cassette flat and press until it is seated.
- Close the cover without forcing it.
The print head may be very hot after use. Do not touch it or force the ribbon carriage by hand.
Paper roll
- Open the paper cover with its release lever.
- Insert the roll in the direction shown inside the cover. Paper should unwind without tension.
- Pull a few centimetres of paper straight out.
- Close the cover fully and tear off the excess at the tear bar.
3. Connect the printer to the network
- Connect Ethernet between the printer and the router or switch.
- Connect the Epson power supply to the printer, then to a reliable outlet.
- Power on and wait for the error light to go out.
- Print a network status sheet with the status button on the Ethernet interface. Its position depends on the installed interface; do not use the reset button.
- Find the IPv4 address, for example
192.168.1.48.
If the address is 0.0.0.0 or missing, check the cable and switch port. An address beginning
with 169.254 means the router did not provide an address.
4. Open Epson TMNet WebConfig
- From the computer or iPad on the same network, open
https://IP-ADDRESS. If HTTPS is not yet enabled on the device, usehttp://IP-ADDRESSonly for this local setup. - If the browser warns about a local certificate, continue only after confirming that the IP matches the printed status sheet.
- Sign in with the administrator credentials printed on the product label or supplied in the printer documentation. Change the default password.
- Reserve the address in the router, or ask the network administrator to configure a suitable static address.
The IP address is only for on-site administration. It is not entered in Foody because Server Direct Print uses an outbound connection from the printer to the cloud.
5. Register the printer in FoodyAdmin
Open FoodyAdmin → Settings → Printers, then select Register printer.
| Field | Recommended value |
|---|---|
| Name | Physical location: Kitchen, Pizza pass, Bar 1, or Bar 2 |
| Vendor | Epson Server Direct Print |
| Model | Exact reference, for example TM-U220IIB-i |
| Epson gateway | Direct if this printer polls Foody; otherwise select the registered Epson gateway |
| WebConfig ID | A unique ID such as restaurant-kitchen-01 |
| Printer device ID | local_printer in direct mode; the exact WebConfig device ID in gateway mode |
| Width | TM-U220 · 76 mm · 384 dots |
| Interval | 2 s |
| Station | Select an existing station or create one named after its physical location |
Select Register. Foody then displays these values once:
- Server Direct Print URL;
- status notification URL;
- WebConfig ID;
- password;
- Digest realm.
Keep this screen open for the next step. The password is not shown again after closing. Do not send it through an unsecured message or photograph.
6. Configure Server Direct Print in WebConfig
In TMNet WebConfig, open Server Direct Print and enable it. Copy the values generated by Foody exactly:
- Server Direct Print URL: the print URL shown by Foody.
- ID / User ID: the WebConfig ID selected in FoodyAdmin.
- Password: the one-time password.
- Device ID:
local_printerfor the built-in printer, or the exact device ID registered behind a gateway. - Interval: 2 seconds.
Enable Status Notification and enter its Foody URL with the same credentials. Save and apply the configuration, then allow the printer to restart if requested.
Do not add spaces before or after the ID, password, or URLs. Foody URLs must remain https://.
7. Wait for Online and print a test
- Return to Settings → Printers.
- Wait up to 15 seconds. Status should move from Unknown to Online, and Last seen should update.
- Select Test or Print test ticket.
- Wait for the complete ticket. Foody marks it printed only after the Epson confirms the result.
- Check the station name, French and Hebrew characters, paper feed, and legibility.
If status remains Unknown, the printer is not reaching Foody. If it is Online but the test fails, open Jobs to see the latest device error.
8. Create production stations
A station is a logical destination. Menu components route to the station, and the station owns its printer. A failed printer can therefore be replaced without changing the menu.
For a four-printer kitchen, a practical layout is:
| Station | Primary printer | Typical content |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Kitchen Epson | Hot dishes, starters, fried items |
| Pizza pass | Pizza Epson | Pizzas and pizza extras |
| Bar 1 | First bar Epson | Drinks and cocktails |
| Bar 2 | Second bar Epson | A second drinks copy when both bars produce |
Use Full order copy for an expediter who needs the whole order. A fallback printer does not create a second copy; it is used only when the primary printer is unavailable. To print on both bar printers, create two stations and route drinks to both columns.
9. Route categories and exceptions
Open Routing:
- Check every station that should receive each category.
- For example, route
Pizzasto Pizza pass andDrinksto Bar 1 and Bar 2. - Save the matrix.
- Add an item override only when an item must leave its category route.
- Add a modifier override for an independently produced component, such as a sauce sent to the kitchen while the main item goes to the grill.
Before enabling server printing, the setup panel should show every printer tested, every station assigned, and every category routed.
10. Send a real Foody ticket
- Enable Print kitchen tickets from the server.
- In FoodyPOS, create a test order containing an item from each routed category and a modifier with a special route.
- Confirm or send the order to the kitchen according to the restaurant workflow.
- Confirm that each station receives only its lines and that a full-order station receives the complete order.
- In FoodyAdmin, open Jobs. Each ticket should move from Queued to Awaiting confirmation, then Printed.
Do not start live service until this end-to-end test passes. Keep the previous printing method available during the first live order as a temporary precaution.
Quick troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| No network light | Ethernet cable, switch port, and power |
Address 169.254.x.x | The router's DHCP server did not answer |
| WebConfig cannot be reached | Same network, correct IP, and guest isolation disabled |
| Server Direct Print is missing | Non-intelligent model or incompatible firmware/interface |
| Unknown in Foody | Service disabled, wrong URL/ID/password, or blocked DNS/Internet |
| Online but no order ticket | Station not assigned, category not routed, or server printing disabled |
| Failed job | Open Jobs, fix the paper/cover/ribbon error, then run another test |
| Wrong station | Review the category matrix and item/modifier overrides |
